The Lost Ninja Party Pics

This last year of my life was the absolute best year that I've had on this rock we call earth. My friends have been amazing and supportive and so many things have fallen into place - I truly feel so blessed. I've been fortunate enough to travel all of the country to shoot fights for the UFC and I've started working with Headrush Brand clothing, a major MMA based fashion line. I've been shooting more paid gigs and working on more Deft Perception projects like the Pro Wrestling event featured 3 weeks ago on the site. Its been really awesome and there is no sign of letting up. This month I'll be gearing up to shoot a wedding in the Caribbean and UFC 13o in Las Vegas towards the end of the month. The day job that I'm working hard at is going quite well and all of my clients are very happy. It can be hard to balance it all out at times, but I'm doing it, and having a beautiful time. By shooting with Heavy.com I've invariably generated more attention to myself as a sports and event photographer and I've been taking a hard look at how I've branded myself - and what I've come up with is kind of funny.... I've just been being myself and it's been working, but it's high time to STEP IT UP!

I did a photoshoot with Chaz Cruz yesterday where I was the subject. It was a total trip because i'm hardly ever in front of the lens but in the name of getting to be shot by one of the guys who helped me get started in this photography game I felt compelled. Those pics will be coming later this week.

In the end of 2010 I turned 29 years old. Yes... I am an old man and I like to go to sleep at 10:00PM, and I walk around the house and I grumble at inanimate objects from time to time, and to top it off, I have started to get pretty grumpy if I don't have a midafternoon snack. Next year is the big 30, and I have to take myself a little bit more seriously. WIth that thought as my theme I hosted my first ever Ninja Party and I invited 16 of my closest friends to share in the fun. Pete Ulatan from Nakama Brand shot the original hotshots, but here is the last set of lost images from that fateful day. ENJOY!

Ryan Loco and I have seen a lot together. We've had the pleasure of traveling this fine country, and taking some cool footage of amazing places and amazing events. To say we've become de-sensitized to taking cool shots would be the wrong word and an insult to the fantastic things and people we get to experience every day. If anything, it means that when we do get excited, we're a part of something wonderful. Such was the case this past week, when Ryo Chonan told us that we could do a shoot with Shinya Aoki. Watch this to familiarize yourself with him.

Enjoy James Law's look at Shinya Aoki and Ryo Chonan.

And also, we will be auctioning off a signed Jaco Clothing 1 of 1 Japan hat, with all proceeds going towards the relief effort in Japan.

Best of 2010 - MMA Culture Photos

This post was originally featured for Deftperception.com This year started with shooting local fights for fun to shooting cageside at the Ultimate Fighting Championships for Heavy MMA along side Esther Lin and Tracy Lee. These 2 have been shooting for a long time and have helped my growth enormously; going from looking at their pictures behind my desk to actually being there is quite a trip. My personal highlights include shooting my first UFC cageside and working with All Elbows for the KJ Noons Strikeforce promotion alongside E. Casey Leydon. I've always loved their work and being included on one of their projects was a true honor. Working along side Loco throughout this time has been one of the best experiences of my life.

We spent the beginning of the year photographing fighters from K1, including Mark "fightshark" Miller, Strikeforce fighter Conor Huen and WEC's Dominick Cruz. At the time, Dominick was preparing to battle Brian Bowles for the title. I also was able to shoot and work with Fabricio "Morongo" Camoes, who tapped me out for photos, which was a first.

I shot some various cage setup's with Vanguard MMA's Eric Lee. He builds and fabricates some of the best custom cages in the business including RVCA, Blackhouse, The Noguera Brothers Gym, Huntington Beach Ultimate Training Center and others.

Enjoy the photos!

Testing Tomorrow Photoshoot | Studio Time

Jeff Stevens, my childhood friend from my Colorado days has been with his band Testing Tomorrow with Jesse Dean for the last 4 years and have become very popular in the L.A music scene. Recently they added 2 new members to the mix GroM who is a very powerful drummer with some awesome accolades under his belt and experience touring in Europe and the US extensively. Andrew is the new bassist and moved from Hawaii to work with the band, both these guys are characters and have very awesome and unique styles. They've recently made some big moves and are recording another awesome album - Jeff plays the scratch tracks for me anytime I'm up in L.A and need some motivation. Jeff and I played in a band in high school together so it's always a treat to hear their new stuff and talk about what I love about his music. Yes, Im guilty of being a has-been drummer. What a week! 4 shoots this week and 3 more next week. It's a very busy pace, but I'm really taking a lot in and learning from these great experiences. As always, I've got Ryan Loco with me. He put together this awesome video of the action. Jeff Stevens guest edited the photos and I shot 'em.

Enjoy and don't forget to check out TESTING TOMORROW now.
